Job description of Matcha manufacturing assistant job(Manufacturing Section)

At AIYA's factory, tencha tea leaves, the raw material for matcha, are ground in a tea mill, the finished matcha is collected, and the product is shipped after inspection.
It sounds simple when you say it, but in actual production, things rarely go as planned, so it's important to be creative and ingenious in each process to ensure everything goes smoothly.
This department values teamwork and aims to manufacture the highest quality matcha anywhere.

Connecting the world with Aiya,
the center of matcha production

Manufacturing Section ManagerMichitake Hayakawa

No matter what position you are in, you should have the mindset of a factory manager at Aiya.

Many of the new recruits are in charge of the “leaf insertion” process, which involves putting the raw tea leaves, tencha, into the tea mill. AIYA has over 1,000 mills, and you put leaves into each of the rotating mills. It's a simple task, but a very important job. What's important is how much you can be aware of the entire factory, no matter what job you're doing. Even if you're told to insert leaves, if you just insert leaves, you won't grow and stay the same a year later. Insert the leaves as quickly as possible, insert them without spilling, what can you do to achieve that? You always have to think and devise. If you can do it quickly, you'll have more time. That way you can see the work before and after.

As a result, the scope of your work will expand. If your scope expands, the range of work you're entrusted with will also increase. This will eventually lead to you becoming a factory manager who is aware of the entire factory. It's important to always work with that kind of awareness, and I think that makes work many times more interesting.

Responding to strict requirements from product development staff

There are many different kinds of matcha. After meeting with the product development staff of sweets and ice cream makers, the sales staff requests the color, taste, aroma, etc. of the matcha they want. In other words, it is a request from the product development staff. Product development is the job that each manufacturer puts the most effort into. For that reason, the demands are severe. But on the other hand, it can also be seen as an expectation.

Due to its 130-year history, AIYA receives matcha requests from many manufacturers. Due to confidentiality agreements, I cannot tell you the names of the companies or products, but there are many products that I'm sure you all know.

Product development staff of famous companies have high expectations of matcha. How can we manufacture and deliver it? We think about it together with the sales staff and factory staff, and work together to manufacture matcha. When that matcha is adopted and I see the products lined up in the store, I really think that I am glad I did this job. It's a shame that I can't tell my friends (laughs).

We are making matcha to deliver to the world

Matcha is a truly wonderful ingredient. Not only is it attractive for its color, taste, and aroma, but its health benefits have been attracting attention recently. I think that this health benefit is a major factor in its popularity around the world. In today's world, where health is important, I think matcha will become even more popular.

In addition, matcha is a symbol of Japanese culture, and with the 2020 Tokyo Olympics approaching, I think the number of foreign travelers will increase, so I think it will attract even more attention. In particular, Aiya's matcha is made using traditional tea mills, and is of high quality, so it is a matcha that you can be proud of no matter where you sell it. And its sales channels are now spreading all over the world. I remember feeling very proud when a friend in Germany told me that "Aiya's matcha" is popular here too. Aiya has local subsidiaries in the United States, Germany, Austria, China, and Thailand, and will continue to spread matcha even more around the world. Our work is at the center of its production. This manufacturing department is the place where you can get a real sense of making matcha that is spreading around the world.
